SkyTech Millivolt On/Off Remote Control Customer Review

We use this device to control a furnace rated gas fireplace. It operates on battery as opposed to 110 volt wall current and that is a real plus when there is a power outage. Recently we purchased a second one of these devices based on two years of success with the first device. The second device operates a fireplace at a vacation home that is subject to power outages. Because it can be set to monitor the temperature and operate the fireplace without 110 volt current, it provides a backup heat source when the power is out and the temperatures are below freezing. This is important for a vacant home and it is helpful when the home is occupied. Be aware though that the fan on the fireplace will not run during a power outage so this device does not overcome that issue. FYI, batteries seem to last over a year so battery consumption is not an issue.

Enviro-Log Fireplace Log, 3 Lb Customer Review

Not sure how the previous reviewer could have given these such a poor rating, but for me, they work great. For starters, they are safer than burning traditional wood, which is a great start. If you have a fire in your fireplace all the time, these probably are not the best bang for your buck, but if you are like us and only have a fire in the fireplace from time to time (once or twice a week on Winter nights) these are perfect.

These things are terribly easy to use. You tear off the wrapper and throw them in the fireplace, using the wrapper as kindling, and they light right up. You could even just light the log itself if you want, for a slower start.

I recommend using two logs at a time to get a full-sized fire. These will last for 3-4 hours, and as they crumble apart the flames get larger (similar to when you stoke a natural wood fire). At times, the flames were huge from the two logs - at other times, they were fairly subdued - but in my experience this isn't much different than regular wood fires. These do leave more ashes behind than a Duraflame, but obviously much better for the environment and your health/safety.

The only negatives I can think of are price (more expensive than bulk purchased wood) and appearance. They have a waxier look than a duraflame, so for someone who really cares about the look of wood in a fire, it could be a drawback - otherwise it's a great use of recycling.

First thermostat/remote purchase. Using it on a Martin fireplace with great results. Difficulty of installation of 5 if 1-10, just b/c I had to do some minor mods to install the off/on/remote component on the wall and 2 feet of supplied wire didn't suffice. Very easy to operate, and didn't mind that the thermostat is programmed to activate when it is 2 degrees below your set temp and shuts off the flame 2 degrees above the set temp. So if you set it at 71 deg, it will turn on at 68 deg and off at 73 deg. Haven't had the need to use the remote from the lazyboy yet, works just fine setting it while mounted to the wall and walking away. With evening temps at 38-45 deg the fireplace comes on about 3 times for mayb 20 min intervals and then shuts off. It is usually turned on at 6pm and shut off at 10pm. Had the thermostat for 3 months now and very satisfied.

I remember my younger years, when my family had a house in East Hampton, New York, and on cold wintry days, we would gather around the fireplace to keep warm. Sometimes we used real wood in the fireplace for that unique, one-of-a-kind crackling sound that only wood can provide. Other times, we used firelogs such as this Duraflame product. Synthetic firelogs such as this one do not come close to providing the atmosphere that real wood does, but they do burn considerably longer than wood. There is much less maintenance, so you can sit back and relax, not needing to tend to the fireplace every few minutes. I would recommend this product ever-so-highly. Not only would I recommend this product, but I would recommend ALL of Duraflame's products. From their firelogs, to their fire starters, fire lighters, and even their pre-fabricated fireplaces and other accessories. Duraflame is a quality company that makes quality products. The Fireplace Remote was very easy to install and activate. It took a little over 3 mintues. The installation instructions were easy to read and follow. Very happy with the quality of the unit and the distance that the receiver operates is more than advertised in the manual! Very nice unit!

Keep in mind that you need 120V for the receiving unit. Although I installed my own electric to the fireplace which kept the unit hidden, the receiver came with a long electrical plug and connection wires which would possibly allow the receiver to be plugged into an electrical outlet close to the fireplace.
